Last week, I loaded up the family car and hit the highway for a classic summer road trip down to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. If you’ve ever been, you know the vibe: the majestic Smoky Mountains looming in the distance, alpine coasters around every corner, mini-golf castles, and the neon hum of tourist traps. It’s a blast, but as any seasoned road tripper knows, the destination is only half the journey. The real make-or-break moment of any road trip happens in the fluorescent-lit aisles of a highway gas station.
We pulled off the interstate to stock up on snacks for the final stretch. As I walked down the aisle, I was met with rows of organic beef jerky, baked root veggie chips, keto-friendly peanut butter cups, and cold-pressed juices. Everything was clean. Everything was low-calorie. And honestly? Everything was incredibly boring. It got me thinking back to the summer road trips of my childhood in the 90s. Back then, a gas station pit stop wasn’t about health–it was a glorious, chemical-infused free-for-all where we loaded up on the most extreme snacks imaginable. Snacks that felt more like toys than food.

3D Doritos: The Snack That Doubled as a Toy
The absolute king of the 90s road trip snack run was, without a doubt, 3D Doritos. Introduced in the late 90s, these weren’t just normal chips–they were puffy, hollow triangles of pure nacho cheese bliss. But the real genius was the packaging. Instead of a bag that would pop and spill all over the back seat, 3D Doritos came in a clear plastic tube with a black pop-off lid that doubled as a cup. You could pour the chips directly into the cap, eat them without getting grease on your hands, and then use the empty cylinder as a telescope or a holder for your action figures. It was peak snack engineering.
Butterfinger BB’s: The Chocolate-Covered Chaos
If you wanted chocolate, you didn’t buy a boring bar. You went straight for Butterfinger BB’s. These were little, marble-sized pellets of flaky, peanut-butter crunch covered in a thin chocolate shell, packed into a bright yellow bag. The marketing, featuring Bart Simpson telling you “nobody better lay a finger on my Butterfinger BB’s,” made them feel like essential schoolyard gear. The reality of eating them in the summer heat was pure chaos. Within five minutes of sitting in a hot 90s minivan without rear AC, the BB’s would melt into a single, sticky mass. You’d end up pouring the chocolatey sludge directly into your mouth, your face covered in brown streaks, leaving your parents yelling from the front seat about the upholstery. But it was worth every single stain.

The Loss of Snack Personality
Sitting in the car on the way to Pigeon Forge, chewing on my organic almonds, I couldn’t help but feel a little nostalgic for that snack aisle chaos. Where did the fun go? When did tech, snacks, and toys all decide to grow up and get so serious? Sure, our teeth are probably better off today, but our road trips are definitely a little less magical without those hollow cheese pyramids and melting chocolate BB’s.
Dreamers, what was your go-to gas station snack back in the day?
